Black Mountain’s summit is a nature preserve that hosts an abundance of native plants and wildlife, and that provides a spectacular 360-degree view of the Desert Foothills. Please respect Nature’s delicate ecosystem by not damaging or removing any rocks or vegetation along the trail or on the preserve.
The hike to and from the summit takes you along a difficult 2.2 mile round-trip trail through steep terrain on private and public property. Please park in the lot on Mark Way by the Schoolhouse Road trail entrance.
General Rules for Trail Use
- Littering is unlawful. Please bring a small trash bag, and do not leave it on the trail, the mountain, or Schoolhouse Road.
- Damaging or removing rocks, vegetation, or public property is prohibited.
- Stay on the designated trail—all other areas are off limits.
- Be considerate of other trail users—downhill traffic should yield to uphill traffic.
- Speak in a soft voice—sound travels far in the open desert.
- Keep pets on leash at all times; clean up after your pet.
- On Schoolhouse Road, please step to the side to allow vehicles to pass.
- Do not smoke. Smoldering cigarettes can easily ignite the dry vegetation and fire will spread rapidly.
For Your Safety
- Carry ample water.
- Wear hiking boots or very sturdy shoes.
- Wear sunscreen and a protective hat.
- Be alert for rattlesnakes.
- Be prepared for extreme heat and windy conditions at the top.
